Work on the city’s first children’s theatre, where children’s films will be screened, will begin at Jawahar Bal Bhavan in the city this month.

The Rs.2-crore project is being done with the asset development fund of K. Muraleedharan, MLA, and chairman of Bal Bhavan.

The building is proposed to be built adjacent to the children’s park at Bal Bhavan, which is spread over two acres and a half.

The theatre will be fully air-conditioned with a seating capacity for 250 persons.

“The administrative sanction has already been received and the Department of Public Works has allotted the work after floating tenders. The work will begin by the end of this month,” said G. Parameswaran Nair, Executive Officer of Bal Bhavan.

The authorities plan to regularly organise children’s film festivals and other cultural activities at the theatre.

“Children can watch children’s films and child-oriented films on a regular basis. The theatre will be built in such a way that it can also be used for staging dramas of the students here,” he added.
