When fully operational, the park will have a total built-up space of 2.5 million sq. ft.

KOCHI: The development of the upcoming IT park at Cherthala by Infopark, Kochi, has gathered momentum.

Sixty acres of land being developed for the park has already been notified as Special Economic Zone. Another 10 acres will be developed as commercial complex. The park, the foundation stone for which was laid by Chief Minister V.S. Achuthanandan in February last year, is situated on 66 acres of land at Pallipuram village, near Cherthala, about 30 km away from Vyttila.

When fully operational, the park will have a total built-up space of 2.5 million sq ft, offering over 20,000 direct employment opportunities. An investment of Rs.1,000 crore for the development of the entire park is expected to attract exports worth Rs.1,200 crore in the future.

State IT Principal Secretary Ajay Kumar said an investment of Rs.100 crore had been earmarked through partnership model for the development of the first phase. “The park, on completion of the first phase, is expected to generate about 1,500 IT/ITES employment opportunities by early 2011,” he said.

Infopark chief executive officer Siddhartha Bhattacharya said the formalities were being completed for tendering the 2.4 lakh sq ft IT building.

The infrastructural development works already under way include construction of a compound wall as per SEZ standards, internal roads, cable trenches, drainages, landscaping, 110 kV - 20 MVA substation, state-of-the-art power distribution system using underground cables and Ring Main Units (RMU), Sump & Overhead tank for water storage and distribution and sewage treatment plants.

The other facilities planned include a working women’s hostel with day-care centre. An exclusive area is earmarked for commercial space, consisting of shopping malls, banks, ATMs, recreation centres, convention centres, etc.

The Cherthala Infopark can be accessed by road from Kochi (36 km), Vaikom (15km), Kottayam (34km) and Alappuzha (22km) by road. The nearest airport is the Cochin international airport, about 50 km north-west and the nearest seaport is Kochi, 36 km north-west of the town. The international tourist destination Kumarakom is just 18 km away.

The completion of Inforpark Cherthala and Infopark Ambalapuzha is expected to give a major facelift to the district of Alappuzha, blending its natural beauty with IT potential, and converting it into a prominent IT and tourism destination.
