A 61-year-old woman was killed and a one-and-half-year-old boy she was cradling sustained minor injuries when she was hit by a public transport bus at the Kerala State Road Transport Corporation’s bus terminal here on Wednesday.

The police identified her as Sharada, a resident of Vazhimukku in Balaramapuram police station limits. She is the grand-aunt of the infant, Asif, she was carrying at the time of the accident.

Asif was admitted first to the nearby Women and Children’s Hospital at Thycaud and was subsequently referred to the SAT Hospital. The police, quoting doctors at the SAT, said the child was in a stable condition.

However, only detailed diagnostic tests will reveal the extent of his internal injuries, if any.

Asif is the son of Sayed Ali and Suni, both residents of Balaramapuram. Sharada is the sister of Suni’s mother Umaiben.

The police said Suni was under treatment for viral fever at the Intensive Care Unit of the Government Medical College Hospital (MCH) here. She insisted that her son be brought to her. Sharada was taking Asif to the MCH at the instance of Suni’s husband when the accident occurred around 2 p.m.

The police are yet to arrest the driver of the bus involved in the accident. He fled the spot fearing the wrath of passengers who gathered there.
