ALAPPUZHA: One woman was killed and another injured in an explosion at a cracker manufacturing unit near Pathirapally here on Wednesday. The deceased has been identified as Radha, 52, owner of the licensed unit. Monamma, 33, a worker at the unit suffered injuries in the explosion, which occurred around 12 p.m. Radha was arranging crackers inside a room at the unit when the explosion occurred. Monamma suffered injuries when she ran into the room to save Radha.

Fire engines from Alappuzha and Cherthala had to toil for over an hour to douse the fire that was set off by the explosion. A motorbike parked nearby was also burnt in the fire. Nearby buildings also suffered damage.

The sound of the explosion was heard at least three kilometers away from the spot, the police said.

Radha's family has been in the business for over 25 years and she took over the business after her husband died a few years ago. She is survived by two children, Manoj and Manju. Police are investigating the reason for the explosion.
