A wild tusker died at Chettyalathur inside the Wayanad Wildlife Sanctuary in the early hours of Saturday after undergoing an ordeal since being trapped in the marshes at the isolated settlement, on the Kerala-Tamil Nadu border, on Wednesday.

Its hind legs were paralysed owing to a concussion of the vertebral column. A team of forest veterinary surgeons and experts from the veterinary colleges at Mannuthy and Pookode tried to revive the animal after it was shifted to an elevated ground on Friday.

Saji Joseph, surgeon, veterinary hospital, Sulthan Bathery, performed the autopsy.
