Mayor A.K. Premajam on Sunday inaugurated the National Folklore Festival being organised by the City Corporation here. Deputy Mayor P.T. Abdul Latheef presided over the inaugural function. Chairman of the Kerala Folklore Academy Mohammed Ahammed was the chief guest.

Corporation opposition leader M.T. Padma and secretary M. Kunhumuhammad; Raghavan Payyanad, festival director; M. Dasan, head, Department of English, Kannur University; and E.K. Govindavarma Raja, head, School of Folklore Studies, Calicut University, were present.

The week-long festival will be held at the Town Hall and Kandamkulam Jubilee Hall.

The City Corporation is organising the festival in association with the Kerala Folklore Academy and the Calicut University School of Folklore Studies.

The festival gives special focus on ‘Kalamezhuthu' and more than 50 ‘kalams' will be made during the festival. Similar art forms from other parts of the country such as Rangoli and Kolam have also been included in the festival.

The festival is organised with the aim of creating awareness of the traditional colour patterns of the State among the younger generation, especially schoolchildren. Workshops, seminars and stage presentations will be held as part of the festival.

Oppana, Margam Kali, Thiruvathira and Poorakkali, by Peelikkod Vengekkad Sree Kshetra Poorakkali Sangham, were staged after the inaugural function.

Artist Madanan will inaugurate the ‘Kalamezhuthu' at Jubilee Hall at 9 a.m. on Monday. A national seminar will follow. Calicut University Vice-Chancellor M. Abdul Salam will inaugurate the seminar.

The Kalamezhuthu will be undertaken by various groups at the Kandamkulam Jubilee Hall on February 21, 22 and 23. A. Pradeep Kumar, MLA, will inaugurate the exhibition of ‘kalams' at 4 p.m. on Wednesday.

Cultural fete

Various art forms will be staged at the Town Hall every evening during the festival.

Ramachandra Panikker and group will present Agnibhairavan Theyyam on Monday. Keezhillam Unnikrishnan and group will present Mudiyettu while P.P. Sreenivasan and group will present Thiriyozhichil Pulluvan Pattu on Tuesday.

Kunhirama Peruvannan and group will present Gandharvan Theyyam while T.S. Parameswaran and group will present Nandikeshwaran and Ayyappan Theeyattu on Wednesday.
