KOZHIKODE: Nearly 1,000 families in the Malaparamba Housing Colony and its surroundings are suffering due to disruption in water supplied by the Kerala Water Authority (KWA) for five days.

“A majority of the residents cannot afford to buy drinking water from outside. Many of them had to leave their houses,” Malaparamba Housing Colony Residents Association president Edathil Gangadharan said.

River goes dry

It has been alleged that drinking water had been diverted for irrigation purposes. However, KWA authorities said that the supply was disrupted as the Punoor river, the main source of water pumped to the area, went dry. They said that they had begun drawing water from the Peruvanamozhi dam on Saturday itself as per the directions of the District Collector.

Water would be supplied without much delay, the authorities added.
