Leak in pipeline causes erosion of approach road
PATHANAMTHITTA: Drinking water supply to Upper Kuttanad has been disrupted since Tuesday forenoon following a leakage in the main pipeline at Manippuzha, near Thiruvalla.
A pit was formed on the approach road of the Manippuzha Bridge on the Thiruvalla-Mavelikara State Highway owing to the leakage.
The disruption of water supply caused hardship to residents of the Upper Kuttanad region who depend on the Kerala Water Authority (KWA) for potable water.
Vehicular traffic on the bridge was restricted to a single-line from Tuesday forenoon, following the partial erosion of earth from the lower portion of the bridge approach.
P.K. Rajeev, Assistant Executive Engineer, Public Works Department, said vehicular traffic would be diverted from the bridge on Tuesday night to facilitate digging of the approach road and repair of the pipeline.
The KWA has laid 500-mm cast iron pipes at a depth of five-and-a-half-feet along the bridge approach.
The KWA authorities are yet to confirm whether the leakage was from joints in the pipeline or due to a pipe burst.
