KANNUR: Water level of the Pazhassi Irrigation Project reservoir at Kuyiloor here has been brought down to enable the mechanical wing of the Irrigation Department to repair one of the 16 radial steel shutters of the barrage across the Valapattanam river that developed breach on December 20.

The water level of the reservoir was on Wednesday brought down to 13.72 metres following the decision of a high-level meeting in Thiruvananthapuram on Tuesday chaired by Water Resource Minister N.K. Premachandran amidst concern that the release of water from the reservoir might lead to severe water scarcity in the district as the reservoir, originally envisaged as a major irrigation project, is now the source of 12 water supply schemes here.

The decision to bring down the water level had been taken following difficulties in repairing the shutter which got struck underwater.

The Pazhassi Irrigation Division officials exuded hope that water level in the reservoir would go up after the repair work.
