‘No enough recipients for SC/ST fund’

Many of the community members are financially stable

Corporation utilised only 23 per cent

of the funds

KOCHI: The Corporation Council on Saturday adopted a resolution requesting the State government to waive the clause to set apart compensation for funds not spent during last year under the head of welfare for Schedule Castes and Scheduled Tribes communities.

The norm is that at least 85 per cent of the total fund allotted for welfare of SC/ST communities should be spent, failing which the unutilised volume of funds should be set apart as compensation from the general funds in the next financial year.

Speaking at the special council meeting convened to approve the draft proposal for Kerala Development Programme 2007-’08, Mayor Mercy Williams said the civic body could not find enough beneficiaries during last year, as many of the community members were financially stable and hence do not fall under the criterion for welfare schemes.

The Corporation had spent only 23 per cent of the funds identified under this head, she said.

The practical difficulties in implementing the Sarva Siksha Abhiyan schemes would be brought to the notice of the State government.

More discussions would be held on the issue raised by many councillors, whether funds should be allotted for roads owned by the Public Works Department (PWD), she said.
