Yesteryear actor Waheeda Rehman will be the chief guest at the International Film Festival of Kerala (IFFK) beginning December 10, the organisers said here on Sunday.
IFFK chairman and festival director K.R. Mohanan said Waheeda Rehman and German filmmaker Werner Herzog would be present as the guests for the inaugural ceremony in Thiruvanantha- puram.
The eight-day festival is organised by the Kerala State Chalachithra Academy (KSCA). Mr. Mohanan said 14 films from Asia, Africa and Latin America would vie for the top awards at the festival.
Suvarna Chakoram, to be given to the best movie in the competition section will carry a cash award of Rs.15 lakh, which will be shared between the director and the producer.
Rajata Chakoram and cash prize of Rs. 4 lakh will be given to the best director and another Rajata Chakoram and Rs. 3 lakh to the best debut filmmaker, he added. Mr. Mohanan said that in addition to this, Rajata Chakoram and Rs 2 lakh would be awarded as the audience prize.
He said in a bid to promote Malayalam cinema, films in the language selected for the festival will be given cash grant of Rs.1 lakh, which will be shared between the producer and the director.
The KSCA will also make a new English subtitled print of each of the films which will be sent to other festivals.
