Displaying splendid energy on his 90th birthday, Leader of the Opposition V.S. Achuthanandan has said that he will continue his fight against corruption and government policies that hurt the people.

He was speaking to presspersons after a modest birthday celebration at his official residence here on Sunday.

Mr. Achuthanandan said the Left parties would continue their campaign against Chief Minister Oommen Chandy until he resigned and faced a judicial inquiry covering his ‘involvement’ in the solar scam. “I will be in the forefront of that struggle,” the Communist veteran asserted.

Mr. Achuthanandan celebrated his birthday without much fanfare, in the presence of his family, members of his personal staff, and mediapersons, cutting a cake. Among those present was his younger sister and grandchildren. Finance Minister K.M. Mani and Revolutionary Socialist Party general secretary T.J. Chandrachoodan arrived at the house of the Leader of the Opposition to greet him.

He also received birthday wishes from Communist Party of India(Marxist) [CPI(M)] general secretary Prakash Karat, Defence Minister A.K. Antony, Minister for Overseas Indian Affairs Vayalar Ravi, Speaker G. Karthikeyan, and CPI(M) Polit Bureau member Kodiyeri Balakrishnan over phone.

The day began like any other for Mr. Achuthanandan. An early bird, he went through his rigorous physical exercises and scanning of the newspapers before moving on to the birthday celebrations. Initially, he did not join the staff members who wanted him to cut the cake, but relented following gentle persuasion from his family members and the staff, and cut the cake with his wife and sister by his side. He continued to receive a steady stream of visitors during the day, many of them ordinary party workers.
