As part of the year-long 150th birth anniversary celebration of Swamy Vivekananda being organised by the Kanyakumari Vivekananda Centre from Saturday, elaborate arrangements have been made to make the event grand in Kollam too.

The district-level celebration will begin with a Jayanti Sobha Yatra at Anandawalleshawaram at 4 p.m. on Saturday. The procession will pass through the High School junction, Taluk Office junction, Chamakada, Main Road, Chinnakada and culminate at the Cantonment Maidan.

Calicut University former Vice Chancellor G.K. Sasidharan will flag off the Yatra, which will comprise hundreds of people in saffron attire, floats depicting memories of Swamy Vivekannanda and folk arts. Celebration committee president P. Keshavan Nair will lead the procession.

Various programmes, including youth and women’s congregations, folk arts festivals, and a gathering of forest-dwellers, will be organised throughout the year. Competitions for students will be held on September 11, the anniversary of Swamy Vivekananda’s famous Chicago speech.
