Thiruvananthapuam: The Pangode Military Station here celebrated Vijay Diwas on Wednesday to mark India’s victory over Pakistan in the 1971 war. Serving and retired armed forces personnel paid tributes to the soldiers who laid down their lives in the multi-pronged operation by the Indian Army, Navy and Air Force along with paramilitary forces.

The celebrations began with a solemn ceremony at the War Memorial. Brigadier Krishan Kumar, Station Commander, Pangode Military Station, laid a wreath at the War Memorial. Honorary Captain Thomas Philipose (Retd.) and Col. M.T. Verghese (Retd.) placed wreaths on behalf of the Armed Forces Veterans.

Officers from IAF, 16 Madras Battalion, 2/4 Gurkha Rifles battalion, Military Hospital, and representatives of other ranks from Army and Air Force laid wreaths at the memorial. The function began with ‘Salami Shastra’ saluting the martyrs, followed by ‘Shoka Shastra’. A two-minute silence was observed as a mark of respect. The Army band played the tune of ‘Last Post’ in the background.

In another function held at Bison Sainik Institute, Ishita Kumar, president, Army Wives Welfare Association honoured 35 war widows and presented gifts to them. A special lunch was organised for them at the Sainik Institute.
