To check unauthorised constructions and strengthen the vigilance wing of the Local Self-Government Department, the government has created 16 posts, including that of the Chief Town Planner (Vigilance).

Urban Affairs Minister Manjalamkuzhi Ali said in a release here on Thursday that the vigilance wing would have a Chief Town Planner, instead of a senior town planner.

In addition, it would have three town planners, two typists and a confidential assistant. More powers would be given to the CTP. The decision had been made considering the spurt in constructions. There were also complaints that unauthorised constructions were increasing with support of a section of officials. The delay in clearing construction permits was yet another reason for creating the new posts. Urban development would hereafter be based on the special master plan, he said.
