A vehicle campaign to mobilise public support for the all India general Strike on February 28 called by Central trade unions, including the Centre of Indian Trade Unions (CITU), Indian National Trade Union Congress (INTUC), All India Trade Union Congress (AITUC), and Bharatiya Mazdoor Sangh (BMS), will begin on February 21.
Announcing this at a press meet on Monday, trade union leaders including C. Krishnan, MLA; and K.P. Sahadevan, said that the 24-hour general strike starting from midnight on February 27 would be the first complete national shutdown called by all the Central trade unions.
They said that the campaign to marshal support for the strike would be flagged off at Payyannur at 5 p.m. on Tuesday. AITUC State secretary J. Udayabhanu would inaugurate the campaign. The trade union leaders also said that the campaign would include demonstrations in panchayats and municipalities on February 25 and local-level torchlight processions on February 27. Striking workers would also take out demonstrations in the district, they said.
