The maiden inter-university quizzing championship conducted by the University of Calicut began at Tenhipalam on Thursday.

Inaugurating the championship, titled Quiz Panorama 2013, Calicut University Vice Chancellor M. Abdul Salam exhorted the students to observe the happenings around them closely and keenly.

“You can definitely have a fruitful future by going beyond what you merely see, and by closely observing and analysing the things,” Dr. Salam said.

The Vice Chancellor described the Quiz Panorama as part of the university’s efforts to enhance the employment fitness of the student.

“We are going beyond giving certificates and degrees. Quizzing will increase the inquisitive nature of the students,” he said.

IQA support

Dr. Salam said it was the first inter-university quizzing championship being held in the country with the support of the International Quizzing Association (IQA), the world apex body of quizzing.

Apart from the competitions for university and college students, special quizzing editions for school students and the general public are also being held as part of the Quiz Panorama.

Calicut University Pro Vice Chancellor K. Ravindranath presided over the function. University student union chairman M.M. Sameesh and IQA proctor Snehaj Sreenivas offered felicitations.

Registrar M.V. Joseph welcomed the gathering. Dean of Students Welfare P.V. Valsaraj proposed a vote of thanks. University Public Relations Officer M.V. Zacharia introduced the guests.


The team of Loyola School, Thiruvananthapuram, comprising Adichandranand D. Ganesh won the science quiz championship held for school children on Thursday.

The team comprising Malavika Varma of Presentation Higher Secondary School, Kozhikode, and U.F. Zainaba of Silver Hills Higher Secondary School, Kozhikode, won the second prize. Keerthi Suresh and Abin Varghese of Sacred Heart Senior Secondary School, Kottakkal, won the third prize.

The general public can take part in the three rounds of quizzing to be held on Friday. Those quizzing rounds will be on literature, religion and epics, and sports.

There will be four rounds of quizzing for the general public on Saturday. One of them will be exclusively for women.
