KANNUR: Thalassery will host a cultural pageantry and arts and sports competitions as part of the State-level Co operation Week observance which is already under way.

The 55th Co operation Week observance will be marked by various programmes, organising committee chairman E. Narayanan said here on Tuesday. Arts and sports competitions involving students in institutions under the co-operative sector will be a major attraction, he said.

Over 500 people are expected to participate in the State-level competitions.

The Municipal Stadium here would be the venue for the athletic competitions on November 12. Arts events would be held on November 13 at three venues at the Co-operative Bank auditorium.

The events would be inaugurated by Kerala Sports Council president T.P. Dasan and novelist U.A. Khader respectively.

A proclamation procession was taken out in Thalassery on Monday.

The Co operative Fest being organised at the City Centre at Thalassery in connection with the celebrations has also been drawing crowds, Mr. Narayanan said. Co operative institutions such as the Pariyaram Medical College, Rubco, Raidco, Kerala Dinesh Beedi and Milma, among others, have stalls at the festival venue, he said.

The programmes would be formally inaugurated by Communist Party of India (Marxist) State secretary Pinarayi Vijayan on November 14.

The inaugural function would be preceded by a colourful pageantry at the stadium.

The pageantry would include floats, percussion ensemble, motorcycle performance by Defence Security Corps personnel and other cultural programmes, Mr. Narayanan said. The closing ceremony would be inaugurated by Home Minister Kodiyeri Balakrishnan.
