A.A. Omana, president of the UDF-ruled Varantharapally grama panchayat, said she would move the High Court against the State Election Commission (SEC) having disqualified panchayat members for not convening grama sabha meetings.

“I am yet to receive the disqualification letter,” she said.

The panchayat has 22 members, 12 of whom belong to the UDF, seven to the LDF and the rest to the BJP.

Code in force

“Grama sabha meetings were not convened after the Assembly elections were announced as the poll code of conduct was in force. The panchayat did convene grama sabha meetings in all the 22 wards in connection with the implementation of the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme. We thought this was enough. Such shortcomings will be rectified,” she said.

A few months ago, the LDF members had lodged a complaint with the SEC, blaming the UDF and the BJP for various lapses. Later, the UDF had lodged a complaint against the LDF.
