MALAPPURAM: This year’s edition of Vaidyar Festival began at Mahakavi Moyinkutty Vaidyar Memorial Auditorium at Kondotty on Friday.

Actor V.K. Sreeraman inaugurated the two-day Mapila literary and cultural mela.

Portraits of Padapattu writer Kambalath Govindan Nair, Mapilapattu artiste S.M. Koya, and Vattapattu exponent Pulpatta Abdul Khader were unveiled on the occasion.

A seminar on Oppana, Thiruvathirakali, Margamkali and Vattapattu will be held on Saturday morning. Social critic Sukumar Azhikode will deliver the Vaidyar memorial speech on values of humanity in Malayalam literature. An Oppana competition will be held on Saturday afternoon.

Minister for Local Self-government Paloli Mohammed Kutty will inaugurate the valedictory session. The festival will conclude with a musical evening, in which veteran Mapilapattu artistes such as K.G. Sattar, S.A. Jameel, Eranholi Moosa, Vadakara Krishnadas, Ramla Begum, Ashraf Koduvally and Vilayil Fazeela will participate.

V.M. Kutty will inaugurate the programme titled Ishal Thenkanam.
