Karat inaugurates fourth State plenum of CPI(M)
The fourth State plenum of the Communist Party of India (Marxist) [CPI-M] got to a start with party veteran and Leader of the Opposition V.S. Achuthanandan hoisting the flag amidst loud sloganeering by over 400 delegates attending the three-day meet at Town Hall here on Wednesday.
After the welcome speech by plenum organising committee chairman A.K. Balan, in an unprecedented gesture, Mr. Achuthanandan was invited to address the delegates’ session before its formal inauguration by party general secretary Prakash Karat.
Mr. Achuthanandan, in his short address, called upon the working class to unite in their fight against imperialist and anti-working class forces. He also sought the strengthening of the party to fight all anti-worker and anti-people policies of the Union and State governments.
The party general secretary spoke for 45 minutes and inaugurated the delegates’ session. This was followed by the presentation of the organisational report by party State secretary Pinarayi Vijayan. At 3 p.m., the district-level group discussions on the organisational report started. This will continue from 9.30 a.m. till 8 p.m. on Thursday.
The plenum proceedings will come to an end on Friday by 1 p.m.
Over 2 lakh people are expected to take part in a public rally to be taken out at 4 p.m. to mark the end of the plenum.
