Thiruvananthapuram: Leader of the Opposition Oommen Chandy has said the United Democratic Front (UDF)-ruled local bodies will not implement the new revised building tax rates and has asked the State government to withdraw it.
Inaugurating a dharna by Congress members of three-tier panchayats, municipalities and corporations under the auspices of the Kerala Pradesh Congress Committee (KPCC) here on Thursday, Mr. Chandy alleged that the LDF government was manipulating the delimitation process of local bodies’ wards instead of implementing it on the basis of the Census figures.
KPCC president Ramesh Chennithala, who presided, said the State government was able to avert a treasury ban only because it was not releasing development funds. The dharna was organised in protest against the hike in building tax rates, unscientific manner in which the delimitation process was carried out in wards and non-utilisation of funds, including Central schemes.
All Congress members of the three-tier local bodies, municipalities and corporations participated in the dharna.
