Communist Party of India (Marxist) State secretary Pinarayi Vijayan has called for introspection among those who helped the Congress-led United Democratic Front (UDF) assume power and decide whether they should come out in support of what is right or continue supporting what is wrong.

Addressing a seminar organised in connection with the 50{+t}{+h}anniversary celebrations of the Chintha Malayalam weekly here on Thursday, Mr. Vijayan said the recent revelations in the solar scam had got even the public regretting their decision to vote the UDF to power. Without naming the UDF allies, Mr. Vijayan went on to say that it was time for those who continued to support the Congress to rethink.

The public should not, and would not, bear the consequences of the wrongdoings of those who misused power. It was wrong for the Oommen Chandy-led Congress to mock the power of the people or to underestimate it just because it had the support of the Congress-led United Progressive Alliance government at the Centre, he said, accusing Mr. Chandy of misusing the Chief Minister’s post to derail legal proceedings in connection with the investigation into the solar scam.

Stating that there was no doubt about the culpability of Saritha S. Nair or Biju Radhakrishnan in the case, Mr. Vijayan said the involvement of Mr. Chandy either could not be denied. It had to be debated whether a woman with known criminal antecedents could have so much influence over the Chief Minister’s office.
