The Ernakulam Additional Chief Judicial Magistrate Court (Economic Offences) on Tuesday denied bail to two women detained at the Nedumbassery international airport for carrying 10 kg gold into the country illegally. The women, Arifa Harris and Asifa Veerappoyil, were arrested from the airport on September 19. A report by the Customs Department said Asifa had confessed to smuggling in gold three times before and Arifa twice. They reportedly told officials of the Customs Department that they had committed the offence under pressure from their husbands.

They sought bail citing health problems.
