The city police, on Monday, arrested two men, wanted in several robbery cases, within an hour of their snatching the gold chain of a woman at Tilak Nagar near Parottukonam here on Monday evening.

Circle Inspector of Police, Medical College, A. Pramod Kumar said the duo, Venu, alias airport Venu, and Aryanad Unni, alias Satheesh, were held at Anamugham after a hot chase involving eight police vehicles, including three control room vehicles.

The women who lost the sovereign-and-half gold chain alerted the city police control room, which, in turn, alerted all the control room vehicles. Gopalakrishnan who was on duty at the control room also alerted the officials of the Medical Collge, Sreekariyam, and Thumba police stations. The description given by the woman was also passed on to the police personnel on the streets.

The traffic police personnel at the Medical College junction spotted the motorcyclists with the matching descriptions given by the victim. By that time, eight police jeeps had been deployed all along the route to prevent the duo from escaping. On learning that they were being followed, the accused started riding towards Anamughom. They tried to escape after abandoning the two-wheeler in a pond behind a private hospital there. The police personnel waited on the other side of the pond which the accused swam across, Mr. Pramod Kumar said. The pillion rider took the driver's role in between the chase to hoodwink the police.
