Two schoolchildren drowned in the pond of the Peroor Karunellur temple on Thursday afternoon.

The deceased were identified as Mukesh, residing at Peroor, and Amirshah from Kariode. They were ninth class students of the Chathainamkulam MSM Higher Secondary School.

On Thursday a student organisation had declared an education bandh and there was no class at the school. Taking the opportunity, the two classmates along with two other students went for a bath in the temple pond.

They crossed over a barbed wire fencing around the pond and the unfortunate two entered the waters.

Soon the other two saw them going down and alerted a group of caterers who were cooking food for a wedding at the temple. They rushed to the scene and pulled out Mukesh. But by the time he was dead. Amirshah's body was fished out later by a team from the Fire and Rescue Services.

The bodies were kept at the mortuary of the District Hospital here for autopsy on Friday.
