Six others, occupants of two cars, injured

Two persons were killed on the spot and six others were injured in a road accident in front of the Technopark on the Kazhakuttom-Kovalam bypass in the early hours of Wednesday.

The deceased were identified as Sugathan (60), a resident of Chathannur in Kollam district, and Sivarajan (63), a resident of Chunakkara. The accident occurred when the car, in which the victims were travelling, on its way to the Thiruvananthapuram International Airport to receive Sivarjan’s son Rajesh collided with an SUV coming from the Technopark.

Four other occupants of the car — Sethu, Raju, Govind and Rajasekharan — sustained minor injuries. Sethu and Raju were admitted to the Government Medical College Hospital here with fractures.

Kesevan and Subjith Gupta, both travelling in the SUV and employees of Technopark, were also injured and were treated as outpatients for minor injuries, the police said.

The bodies of the victims were handed over to the relatives after a post-mortem.

The front portion of the car was completely damaged in the accident. The vehicle had to be cut open to rescue the occupants. Police said they had registered a case and ascertaining the cause of accident.

In recent days, several airport-bound vehicles had met with accidents on the National Highway and Main Central Road stretches in the district in the wee hours. Traffic officials said the negligence on the part of the drivers, and drivers dozing off led to several accidents.
