ALAPPUZHA: Two persons were killed when the car they were travelling in rammed a tanker lorry near Thumboli on National Highway 47 on Wednesday.

The police identified the victims as Robin Thomas Varghese, 35, Kandathilkuzhiyil house, Othara West, Pathanamthitta; and Samkutty Kurian, 36, Chakalayil House, Othara, Pathanamthitta. The accident occurred at 4.30 a.m. when they were returning to Pathanamthitta from the Cochin international airport at Nedumbassery after seeing off Samkutty’s father, C.T. Kurian.

The police suspect the driver of the car may have fallen asleep at the wheel, since the driver of the lorry saw the car approaching on the wrong side of the road. By the time the police and Fire & Rescue Servicers personnel managed to extricate the passengers from the badly damaged car, both had died.

The bodies were taken to the Alappuzha Medical College where they were handed over to their relatives after post-mortem examination.
