Thiruvananthapuram: Two nine-year-old boys drowned in a temple pond near Varkala on Wednesday afternoon, the rural police have said.

The deceased were identified as Ajeesh and Adarsh of Punnamoodu. They were neighbours and schoolmates. The Fire and Rescue Services personnel fished out their bodies from the pond near the Alumootil Bhagavathy temple late in the evening.

Some local people alerted the Varkala police after they found school bags and children’s clothes near the pond around 7.30 p.m. The police suspect that the children entered the water around 3.30 p.m. The bodies have been kept in the mortuary of Government Medical College Hospital for post-mortem examination. The police have registered a case of unnatural death.
