Directive by Ombudsman for LSGIs

KOZHIKODE: A technical team from the Kerala Forest Research Institute (KFRI) visited the Government Teacher Training Institute (GTTI) at Nadakkavu here on Friday to inspect whether trees on the GTTI compound should be felled.

The team visited the spot following a directive by Ombudsman for Local Self-Government Institutions M.R.Hariharan Nair to inspect and report whether the four shade trees on the compound should be felled or not as it allegedly posed a threat to the building.

The city-based Conservation of Nature Society had petitioned the Ombudsman to prevent the felling of four shade trees at the GTTI.

Vinod Kumar Damodar, joint secretary of the society, said the Ombudsman would take up the case in its sitting here on June 16.

The society had taken up the issue of felling of trees in the compound on the basis of a photograph published in The Hindu.

Tenders

The Kozhikode Corporation had on March 23 invited tenders for felling the four huge trees. The city Corporation council had later okayed the felling of the trees but the Ombudsman stayed further proceedings.
