KATTAPPANA: A training programme for farmers in organic cultivation, implemented by the Kerala Agriculture Development Society (KADS) with financial assistance from the Spices Board of India, has begun in Mankulam grama panchayat. The panchayat has been selected under the Idukki Organic Project.

Training is being imparted to 1,200 selected farmers in the grama panchayat in organic cultivation, certification, treatment and marketing of the produce.

The classes are led by officials of KADS and the Spices Board.

The demand for organic produce in the internal market has increased. KADS is also planning to export the produce. The organic certification is given in three stages and Mankulam has been selected for the project considering the least pesticide and fertiliser application by farmers in the panchayat.

The training programme is conducted in the ward-level and the farmers are fully supporting the initiative, said Mankulam grama panchayat president Valsamma Shaji.
