`It has led to many accidents at Kumbazha'

PATHANAMTHITTA: The traffic signal system installed by the Pathanamthitta municipality at Kumbazha junction near here has been posing a threat to the road users.

The traffic signal system has not been functioning properly and the District Development Committee (DDC) has taken up the matter for discussion at its two consecutive meetings, recently.

It was alleged that the "unscientific" signal system has led to many accidents at the junction.

The DDC chaired, by the District Collector, had twice directed the municipal authorities to rectify the malfunctioning signal system without any delay in order to avert accidents at the busy junction where the roads leading to Malayalappuzha, Ranni, Pathanamthitta and Konni meet. It was alleged that the traffic signal system was installed without taking the district authority or the Public Works Department into confidence.

Both the DDC meetings were attended by all the seven MLAs in the district and the civic body was yet to take any action on the DDC's direction, it was learnt.

Meanwhile, in a letter to District Superintendent of Police M.N. Jayaprakash on September 30, District Collector Ashok Kumar Singh requested him to expedite the matter in consultation with the municipal secretary.

However, no action has been reportedly initiated either by the civic body or by the police, leaving the signal post a mere `scare crow' at the busy junction.
