THIRUVANANTHAPRUAM: The joint action council of trade unions has demanded the immediate reconsideration of the Union Labour Department's decision to slash the interest on Provident Fund to 8.5 per cent.

In a statement issued here on Monday, it contended that the decision was against the assurance given by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh.

The council described the Centre's stand towards the biggest labour welfare scheme as grossly anti-labour.

The PF and the interest on it were the only relief to the four crore workers who were its members.

The Government had no right to slash the interest on workers deposits, it said.
