Special dispensation package sought for the company
Meeting of mass organisations on October 12
KOCHI: Trade unions in the district cutting across party affiliations have come together to form a united forum to protect Fertilizers and Chemicals Travancore (FACT).
They also drew up a plan of protest action to press the Union government for a special dispensation package for the company until natural gas is available in Kochi.
The FACT Samrakshana Aikya Samarasamity was formed at a meeting of various trade unions here on October 1. Leaders of the samithy, as a show of solidarity, from October 8 will join the leaders of FACT trade unions who are on relay hunger strike before the FACT headquarters.
The samity also decided to hold a meeting of mass organisations on October 12 at the Electricity Workers’ Federation Hall to finalise an agenda for protest action, said K. Vijayan Pillai, district secretary of the AITUC.
A mass meeting of people from the industrial areas will be held on the Ambalamedu and Udyogamandal campuses of FACT on October 16 and 17 respectively.
A State-level convention will be held at the Ernakualm Town Hall on October 23 focussing on the problems faced by FACT.
About 25,000 people are expected to participate in a rally being organised on Kerala Day (November 1) in Kochi drawing the attention of the authorities to the crisis-like situation in FACT.
The relay hunger strike by leaders of various trade unions before the FACT headquarters entered ninth day on Thursday. Trade union leaders Madhu Purakkad, A. S. Venugopal and M. A. Paul were on hunger strike on Thursday.
Employees of the company would skip their lunch on Friday to express their solidarity with the trade union leaders on hunger strike.
