The defence counsel in the T.P. Chandrasekharan murder case on Tuesday produced before the trial court a witness in an attempt to prove that some of the CPI(M) activists accused of hatching the conspiracy at a specified time on April 2, 2012, had actually been taking part in a party programme at Onchiyam Martyrdom Square.
A photographer, T.M. Bhaskaran, of Geetha Studio at Orakkateri, told R. Narayana Pisharadi, judge, Special Additional Sessions Court (Marad Cases), that he had taken pictures of a torch-bearing rally in the afternoon on April 2, 2012. The rally had been organised in connection with the CPI(M) party congress in Kozhikode city.
Previously a prosecution witness Suresh Babu, who was a plant operator at the Orkatteri Dairy Co-operative Service Society, had told the court that he had overheard the conspiracy hatched by CPI (M) district secretariat member P. Mohanan, Onchiyam area secretary C.H. Ashokan, area committee member K.K. Krishnan and Kunnummakkara local committee member K.C. Ramachandran at the flower shop owned by Padayankandi Raveendran, Orkatteri local committee member, at Orkatteri on April 2, 2012.
The case pertained to a seven-member gang allegedly hired by the CPI(M) hacking to death RMP leader T.P. Chandrasekharan at Vallikkad, near Onchiyam, on May 4, 2012.
Mr. Bhaskaran said that CPI(M) activist V.P. Gopalakrishnan had asked him to take pictures of the programme. Mr. Gopalakrishnan (He is another defence witness who will be examined by the court on October 4) and other local people had gathered at the Martyrdom Square at 2.30 p.m. on April 2, 2012. Later CPI(M) leaders V.V. Dakshinamoorthy, T.P. Ramakrishnan, P. Mohanan, C.H. Ashokan, R. Gopalan, V. Balakrishnan and K.C. Ramachandran reached the spot.
Mr. Dakshinamoorthy inaugurated the rally and handed over the lighted torch to Mohanan who in turn handed over it to an athlete Pradeep. Pictures relating to all these events were taken by him. He had used a Nikon D-60 camera. He left only after the rally proceeded on its route, Mr. Bhaskaran said.
He said he had reached his studio at 4 p.m. The CD containing the photographs was also handed over to Mr. Gopalakrishnan. The court also examined the photographs taken by Mr. Bhaskaran using an LED projector.
As many as 16 photographs were examined. The first picture was shot at 2.50 p.m. C.H. Ashokan and others were in a photo taken at 2.58 p.m. while Mohanan, Mr. Dakshinamoorthy and others were seen in the picture taken at 3.24 p.m. Chombala Sub Inspector E.J. Jayan and other police personnel were in two photographs. The court also considered as documentary proof the photographs taken at 3.24, 3.25, 3.26, 3.30, 3.31, 3.32, 3.35 and 3.40 p.m. All these photos had images of Mr. Dakshinamoorthy handing over the torch to Mohanan and subsequently to the athlete.
