Students of the Government Nursing College in Kozhikode, undergoing internship at the Kozhikode Medical College, went on a token strike on Thursday demanding remuneration on par with staff nurses and award of experience certificate for the compulsory service.

Jean K. Jose, unit secretary of the Intern Nurses Forum, said the students had not received any positive response from the government regarding their demand. He said the forum would intensify the strike if the demands were not met. He said that students of the nursing college would also join the strike. The move may affect the normal working of the medical college which was already suffering from shortage of nursing staff, he said. The students claimed that they did work equivalent to staff nurses and were even over used due to shortage of staff nurses. However, they were paid a meagre amount of Rs.4,500 a month as stipend.

The students also demanded that they be awarded degree certificates as soon as they completed the course, just like the private college students.
