This year’s Thunchan Festival will begin at Thunchan Paramba in Tirur on Wednesday.

Sitakanta Mahapatra, popular Oriya poet and Jnanpith laureate, will inaugurate the literary festival in the morning. M.T. Vasudevan Nair, Jnanpith laureate and Thunchan Memorial Trust chairman, will preside over the function.

P. Valsala, writer, will inaugurate a book festival.

E.T. Mohammed Basheer, MP, will deliver the keynote address. N. Sasidharan, writer, will deliver the Thunchan Memorial Speech on ‘Imagined world in the novel.’

The inaugural session will be followed by a poetry competition and a literary quiz for college students to be held at the Saraswathi Mandapam of Thunchan Paramba.

K. Sreekumar will lead the quiz.

P.N. Suresh, Vice-Chancellor, Kerala Kalamandalam Deemed University of Art and Culture, will inaugurate the Thunchan Kalotsavam in the evening. District Collector M.C. Mohandas will preside over the function.

Uma Nambuthiripad and Lakshmi Parthasarathy Athreya from Chennai will present a thematic Bharatanatyam titled Sakhyam. Viswanath Prasad Tiwari, Hindi writer, will inaugurate a national seminar on ‘Encounters — changing modes of tradition and modernity’ on Thursday morning.

The seminar will be organised jointly by the Thunchan Memorial Trust and the Sahitya Akademi, New Delhi.

M. Thomas Mathew, critic, will preside over the seminar. C. Radhakrishnan, novelist, will deliver the keynote address.

Harishchandra Thorat, Marathi writer; M. Narendra, Telugu writer; and V. Sukumaran, Malayalam writer; will present papers.

B.V. Sasikumar, Umer Tharamel, Sunil P. Elayidam, and C.R. Prasad will present papers at a seminar on ‘Tradition and culture — interfaces in Malayalam poetry.’

Pallavi Krishnan will stage a Mohiniyattom in the evening. The festival will conclude on Sunday.
