The Kerala Catholic Bishops’ Council (KCBC) has demanded that the Madhav Gadgil Committee report on preservation of the ecology of the Western Ghats be thrown out.

A statement issued by the council at the end of its two-day meeting here on Thursday said the Gadgil committee did not take the people living in these areas into confidence while preparing the report.

The report has also not taken into consideration the needs and requirements of these people. It said the Church considered its duty to protect the environment, but it could not approve of any action on environmental protection that went against the interests of man, made in the image of God.

Another demand raised by the council , the apex body of the Catholic hierarchy in Kerala, is that the State government should withdraw from liquor sales. The recent decision to hand over the powers on deciding the opening of new liquor shops to local bodies actually did not transfer full powers to these bodies, the statement alleged.
