Three men from Ayirooppara near Thiruvananthapuram in Kerala on a pilgrimage to Rameswaram were killed in a road accident at Nallammanayakanpatti near Kallikudi in Madurai district, close to Virudhunagar district, in the early hours of Wednesday.

A police officer who was in the vicinity where the accident took place told The Hindu that a four-wheeler (Tavera) hit the median, rolled over a couple of times and smashed against the roadside barricade before coming to a halt in the ditch.

The youth who drove the vehicle is reported to have dozed off. All the occupants were thrown out of the vehicle under the impact of the accident.

Out of seven occupants, Madhu and Sanjeev were killed on the spot while five others suffered serious injuries. They were immediately shifted in an ambulance to the Government Hospital in Thirumangalam.

After giving first aid, Arun, Surendrakumar, Srijith, Sibiraj and Anil were shifted to the Government Rajaji Hospital (GRH) in Madurai for further treatment. Of them, Arun succumbed to his injuries on the way.

The other four persons were undergoing treatment in the Intensive Care Unit of the GRH.

Of them, Sibiraj was in a highly critical condition.

The bodies of Madhu and Sajeev were taken to Thirumangalam Government Hospital for a post-mortem examination. Arun’s body was kept in the GRH.
