Three persons were killed after a tipper lorry crashed into a shop at Mekkunnu in the Chokli police station limits here on Friday.
The driver of the vehicle and two migrant labourers were those killed in the accident which occurred around 4.45 p.m.
Eyewitnesses said the laterite stone-laden tipper lorry, which was on its way to Iritty, was speeding.
Migrant workers killed
It hurtled down a steep road and crashed into Modern Steel Industries, a welding shop, and then Fashion Palace, an adjacent textile shop. The migrant workers were working in the welding shop.
The dead have been identified as K. Dhanil, 26, of Pathayakkunnu, near here, who was driving the lorry, and Daya, 22, and Vinodan, 26, of Kanyakumari.
The migrant workers died on the spot, while Dhanil was pulled out from the vehicle and taken to hospital but to no avail.
Two people were injured in the accident. They were Madhusoodanan, owner of the textile shop, and Mohandas, the cleaner of the tipper lorry. Aneesh, a native of Chokli, who saw the accident had a heart attack and was admitted to hospital.
Local people joined the police in the rescue operations. Agriculture Minister K.P. Mohanan was among the first few who reached the spot and led the rescue measures.
