MALAPPURAM: Three persons, including a lawyer, were arrested with fake currency of the value of Rs.89,500 from different places near Kottakkal on Sunday night.
Mohammed Ashraf Cheerangan, 39, a lawyer practising in the Malappuram court; and Firoz Pallikkathodi, 27, a lawyer’s clerk, were held from Arichol near Kottakkal. The police said 79 fake currency notes in the Rs.500 denomination were recovered from Ashraf’s house at Indianoor near Kottakkal. Firoz belonged to Makkaraparamba near here. The police later reportedly rounded up one Johnson Valiyaparambil from Payyavoor and recovered 50 fake currency notes in the Rs.1000 denomination. Johnson was reported to have handed over the counterfeit currency to Ashraf and Firoz.
The seizure was made on a tip-off by a team led by Circle Inspector M.P. Mohanachandran, sources said. Veerappan Raheem, currently in jail in connection with several vehicle thefts, was reportedly arrested from Ashraf’s vehicle about eight months ago.
Deputy Superintendent of Police A.P. Shoukkathali, who had picked up Raheem from Kattungal, said Ashraf used to carry criminals in his vehicle along with members of his family to escape detection.
