Three persons were held in different instances on charges of selling ganja.

Syed Mohammed, 56, of Paleth Veedu, Malippuram, is accused of selling ganja to school students. Many packets of ganja were in his possession when he was arrested.

In another case, Town South Police arrested Ansar, 36, of Kaitharath Parambil, Kaloor and Vinod, 33, of Alunkal Veedu, Irimpanam, on similar charges. Ansar was arrested from Kadavanthra while moving in an autorickshaw with ganja and Vinod was picked up from near Thevara railway bridge.

Ansar has cases for robbery, selling narcotic substances and theft registered against him at Town North, Central, South and Thrikkakkara police station and is also accused in the case registered at Chenthera police station in Kasaragod for attempted robbery at a petrol pump. Vinod is wanted in Hill Palace police station for various assault and narcotic cases.

Held for gambling

The City Police arrested seven persons in two different cases of gambling. Five persons were picked up from an uninhabited building near Choice company at Palluruthy Choice Road. The police team seized Rs. 21,775, five mobile phones, keys of vehicles used by the accused and three wallets from the site.

Those arrested were Nazeer, 35, of Kunnamveedu, Palluruthy; Aneesh, 29, of Pozhinikarthil, Thangal Nagar; Johnson, 45, of Naduvilathara; Subair, 41, of Madathiparambu, Thangal Nagar; and Hakkim, 27, of Poochamuriparambu, Palluruthy.

Two others – Rafael of Konakathuveedu, Pambayimoola, Edakochi and Rafael of Kothakath – were arrested during the special drive launched following information of gambling activities, known in local parlance as ‘cotton kali', in West Kochi area.

The police team led by Rajesh, sub-inspector, Palluruthy, and Mohammed Nizar, sub-inspector, City Shadows picked them up on the basis of a tip-off received by M.N. Ramesh, Assistant Commissioner of Police, District Special Branch. The police team seized Rs. 3,720 from the accused.
