The Welfare Party of India, the political arm of Jamaat-e-Islami Hind, has threatened to seize the land under possession of Harrisons Malayalam Ltd. at Chundayil in Wayanad as part of its ongoing agitation to provide land for the landless.
The party had taken out a march to the Secretariat in Thiruvananthapuram on October 10 demanding that land given on lease to big business houses and plantation companies be distributed among the landless as soon as the validity of the lease agreement expired. P.K. Abdurahman, Maheen Neroth, and P.C. Bhaskaran, party spokesmen, told presspersons on Thursday that the agitation was to focus on the failure of successive governments that had been in power in the State to implement land reforms though these were introduced almost four decades ago. They said the agitation was also to declare solidarity with the nearly two-and-a-half lakh families whose applications for land were pending with the State government.
