It was the spiritual leader's first visit to Kottayam in 25 years
KOTTAYAM: Thousands paid obeisance to Mata Amritanandamayi on her first visit to the town in the past quarter of a century on Saturday evening.
The Mata was received with a ‘poornakumbh' when she arrived at the specially-constructed podium at the Police Parade Grounds. Bhagavatham exponent Malliyoor Sankaran Namboodiri; Major Archbishop of the Syro Malankara Church Baselios Mar Cleemis; N. Jayaraj and V.N. Vasavan, MLAs, were present. Bindu Santhosh Kumar, Chairperson, Kottayam Municipality, was also present.
‘Bring back compassion'
The function began with a ‘paada pooja' followed by benediction.
The Mata stressed the need to bring back compassion and charity into the midst of the mankind.
“We have reached the zenith of technological knowledge so that we could send man to the Moon and Mars. Let us now strive to bring back compassion back to Earth,” she said.
The Mata drew the attention of the devotees to the plight of thousands of children who are being rendered orphans on account of the wars and other violent conflicts and thousands of families who are pushed into a life of pecuniary crisis on account of liquor and drug addiction of the head of the family.
“Once, we used to celebrate festivals by visiting pilgrim centres. Now most of us throng the liquor shops to celebrate, turning the God's Own Country into Satan's Own Den,” the Mata said.
Her benedictory words were followed by a bhajan and meditation session.
The Mata gave ‘darshan' to the devotees.
