The death toll in the houseboat accident at the Kayal Kurissadi boat jetty, on the Punnamada lake, in Alappuzha, would have gone up had it not been for the quick response of local people, the Fire and Rescue Services, and the police. The survivors said the local people wasted no time in pulling 14 people out of the water.

Divers

Some of the employees of houseboats, berthed in the vicinity, were also expert divers who joined the rescue efforts. As many as 63 persons boarded a boat berthed adjacent to the one scheduled to take them. A team of 14 Fire and Rescue Services personnel from Alappuzha were present.
