As part of its silver jubilee, the Thamarasseri Diocese is organising an agriculture festival, ‘Krishimela 2011', at the St. Sebastian's School grounds at Koodaranhi from January 15 to 17.

Director of the jubilee committee Fr.James Kuzhimattathil told the media here on Wednesday that the festival would include exhibitions, competitions and seminars on topics such as cattle farming, environment and water protection.

Modern farming equipment, machines, agriculture products, seeds and saplings will be exhibited in around 100 stalls. A dog show and cattle show are part of the festival, he said.

Fr.Kuzhimattathil said around 40,000 people from Kozhikode, Wayanad and Malappuram districts were expected to take part in the festival. Prizes would be given for the best agriculture products as well as the best cattle.

A best farmer award will be given to a farmer from each of the 110 parishes under the diocese. On account of the 25 {+t} {+h} anniversary, 25 early migrant farmers in the diocese will be honoured, he added.

General convenor of the festival Augustine Madathiparambil said the former Minister P.J. Joseph would inaugurate the festival at 5 p.m. on January 15. Collector P.B. Salim would inaugurate the agriculture exhibition. Bishop of Thamarassery Diocese Mar Remigiose Inchananiyil would preside over the function.

M.K. Raghavan, MP, would inaugurate a public meeting at 5.30 p.m. on January 16 while Director of the St.Thomas Academy for Research and Training (START) Dr.Anthony Kozhuvanal would deliver a keynote address.

The former Bishop Mar Paul Chittilappilly would preside over the function. The concluding ceremony would be inaugurated by Union Minister of State for Home Affairs Mullappally Ramachandran on January 17. M.I. Shanavas, MP, would deliver the keynote address while the Bishop would preside over the function.
