Kerala Books and Publications Society (KBPS), the government-run press at Kakkanad entrusted with the printing of textbooks for Classes I to X, is confident of completing the distribution of textbooks to school societies before the beginning of the academic year in June, said authorities.

“We are planning to complete distribution of textbooks by May 27,” KPBS Managing Director M. Beena toldThe Hinduon Friday. The society has already dispatched textbooks meant for all the 14 districts to 10 depots across the State from where they will be transported to school societies. The textbooks for schools in Thiruvananthapuram and Kasaragod had already reached the school societies concerned, said Ms. Beena.

The KBPS had taken on rent three godowns of the Warehousing Corporation for time-bound distribution of textbooks.

Besides, instructions had been given to school societies in all districts except Thiruvananthapuram and Kasaragod to remain open on all days, including Sundays, between 9 a.m. and 8 p.m., she added.

While books are being transported directly to the textbook depots by the KBPS, two courier companies had been entrusted with the distribution of the books from depots to school societies. Ms. Beena said the printing of more than 90 per cent of the textbooks had been completed. Printing of textbooks for Class X had been completed. “The KBPS, with six printing machines, can print about 2.25 lakh textbooks a day,” Ms. Beena added.

Sources said that if not for the delay on the part of some schools in conveying their requirements on time, the printing would have been over by now. The delay was despite an online indent registration facility to secure the requirement of schools well in advance.
