PATHANAMTHITTA: Home Minister Kodiyeri Balakrishnan has said that a special wing will be constituted in the Police department exclusively for dealing with the threat of terrorism.
He was inaugurating the newly constructed police station in Pathanamthitta town on Wednesday. Mr. Balakrishnan said those who had got special training in dealing with terrorism would be included in the special wing.
He said the number of murders, including political killings, in the State had come down considerably in the past one year. The total number of murders reported from different parts of the State in 2009 was 325 as against the 393 murders in the previous year. Road accidents too had recorded a marked reduction in 2009 owing to strict enforcement of traffic rules and regulations. He said steps would be taken to strictly enforce the traffic rules in 2010 in a bid to further reduce the accident rate. He said 3,000 ex-servicemen would be recruited as home guards to assist the police in the enforcement of traffic rules across the State.
Mr. Balakrishnan said the Kerala Police Housing Cooperative Society would construct a building for all police stations that did not have a building their own.
The government would recruit 10,000 police constables in the next one year to address the shortage of police personnel. He said 3,000 police constables had already been selected from the State Public Service Commission (PSC) list and were undergoing training at the police training college. Another 7,000 constables would be selected from the PSC list soon, he added.
