KOZHIKODE: A tense situation prevailed at Thooneri, near Nadapuram, in the district following clashes between activists of the Communist Party of India (Marxist) and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Monday night.

The CPI(M) observed a hartal on Tuesday to protest against the attack on its activists. The hartal was peaceful with vehicles keeping off the road and shops remaining closed. A large posse of police is camping in the trouble-hit areas. Several persons, including CPI(M) Thooneri local committee member Thazhapunathil Ranjith, suffered head injuries in the clash. Four BJP activists were also injured in the clash.

The police had to fire grenades and resort to lathi-charge to disperse a violent mob at Thooneri town. Both the political parties had taken out a march to protest against a skirmish on Sunday night. Earlier, three CPI(M) activists and a BJP activist were injured in the incident. The police said the trouble started between two rival groups over bursting of firecrackers. Now the situation is under control.
