Social Welfare and Panchayats Minister M.K. Muneer has said that a project for construction of a social welfare complex at Tavanur will be submitted to the Union government before May.

He was speaking after inaugurating a building of Pratheeksha Bhavan at Tanur on Friday.

He said the complex would have an old-age home, a home for women, Pratheeksha Bhavan, a rescue home and a children’s observation centre. The Minister said funds would be allocated for the complex in the Budget.

K.T. Jaleel, MLA, presided over the function. E.T. Mohammed Basheer, MP, was the chief guest.

The Pratheeksha Bhavan is the only government-managed centre in the State for the welfare and rehabilitation of mentally challenged men. The 18,000-sq.ft, Rs. 3.38-crore building has eight blocks of three rooms each. The Bhavan can house 100 people, though it now has only 68.

District panchayat president Suhara Mampad, Ponnani block panchayat president E. Balakrishnan and Tavanur panchayat president K.V. Santhakumari were present.
